What We Do

Through creative and determined innovation, Prisma Renewable Composites produces materials such as plastics and carbon fibers containing substantial amounts of lignocellulosic biomass. We have a platform of technologies which derive value from all major components of biomass - the lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose - with our core competency focused towards creating advanced composite materials from lignin. Our high-value uses for lignin positively disrupt the conventions of the current biorefining and pulping industry business models in a way many people believed impossible. Our technology reduces dependence on foreign oil, decreases our customers’ carbon footprint, and improves the economy in rural communities.

Prisma Renewable Composites has developed a deep bench of resources with a team devoted to the advancement of Prisma’s mission. Prisma’s Senior Management Team has been carefully selected to provide vital insights needed to effectively guide the commercialization effort and includes backgrounds from successful business development, industrial biotechnology, and materials science. Beyond the SMT, Prisma has engaged over 30 research scientists through our portfolio of carefully structured sponsored research agreements. This tightly integrated Technical Team has been gathered from various departments at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Our research takes advantage of notable scientists who have expertise in advanced materials, including UT’s Center for Renewable Carbon, the Joint Institute for Advanced Materials, the Department of Chemical and BioMolecular Engineering, and the University of Tennessee Space Institute. Collectively, this group provides creative thinking supported by state-of-the-art laboratories and instrumentation which helps bring Prisma Renewable Composites’ vision to life.
